There are three national parks in Burundi hosting a wide range of flora and fauna namely: Kibira, Ruvubu and Rusizi.
Kibira:- In the north-western Burundi lies Kibira National Park atop the mountains of the Congo-Nile Divide and covering 400 sq.km. It is part of the Rwanda’s Nyungwe forest – thus being home to 13 primates species including the chimpanzees. About 16% of this park consists of montane rainforest. Adjacent to it are the 2 large tea estates, Rwegura and Teza. Atotal of 644 tree species, 200 bird species and 98 mammal species are present in this park.
Ruvubu:
Ruvubu national park is located in Cankuzo,Karuzi,Muyinga,Ruyigi, with an area coverage of 43,630 ha. It lies at an altitude between 1,350 and 1,830m. It also lies on land of about 1.5 to 10 KM on both sides of River Ruvubu, eastern coast of Burundi.The park was commissioned in 1980 covering 500 SQ KM.
The park is home to buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, leopards, monkeys, lions, antelopes and over 425 bird species.
Ruvubu national park is 216 km away from Bujumbura.
Rusizi
Rusizi, just located north-west of Bujumbura city, (Parc National de la Rusizi) is the most visited national park in Burundi. The biggest area of the park stretches along Rusizi river eastern bank and the smaller area forming the Rusizi delta at the point at which the river plunges into Lake Tanaganyika. The park boasts of a big population of hippos, monkeys and antelopes coupled with a plethora of birds. Different tree species decorate this park including he Acacia albida and Euphorbia candelabrum form part of the northern part of the park.
